A punt on this mobile giant still a good call

It is all working out as I planned at Vodafone, just about six months too late. I tipped the shares for 2014 on the back of Project Spring, which would use the money from the sale of its stake in Verizon Wireless to build up its network in Europe, offering enhanced 4G services.

This makes perfect sense, not least because many of its competitors are severely cash-strapped and cannot afford such investment, while, with mobile charges generally falling, the market is moving to those that can offer a better service and more data.

In the interim, AT&T, the American group, made clear that it would not be bidding for Vodafone and the market rather fell out love with the shares.
